The Southern Pacific 4294 is a preserved AC-12 locomotive (as well as the only "cab-forward" type preserved in all existance).
Biography[]
4294 was built as the last Southern Pacific Steamer of any kind in 1944. It hauled trains across the mountains like it's sisters.
After people coaxed the Southern Pacific to preserve one cab-forward, 4294 was chosen. It was put outside for an outdoor display in Sacramento, California, but when a highway was going to be built, they had to move the engine to a new location (the SP Shops).
Soon, it was donated to the California State Railroad Museum, where it has been since.
Restoration[]
People for years have been trying to get the engine to operable condition, however, the estimated cost would be over $1,000,000.
